Stump grinder cutting a stump below grade in a Houston backyard

Backyard stump, gone below grade

The tree's been gone since the derecho, but the stump is still there, sprouting mushrooms and eating a string trimmer line a week. Our Carlton grinder fits through a 36-inch gate, so backyard stumps behind a standard Houston fence are no problem, and most residential stumps are dust within an hour.

How Grinding Works

The grinder is a set of carbide teeth on a spinning wheel that chews the stump into mulch, pass by pass. We take stumps 8 to 12 inches below grade as standard, deep enough to lay sod, plant flowers or set a fence post nearby. Need deeper for a new driveway or a replant in the same hole? Say so, we'll grind to 16 inches or more where the roots allow.

Before any grinding we check for utilities. Gas lines and sprinkler mains love to run right past old stumps, and in older Houston neighborhoods the as-built drawings are fiction. If there's any doubt we call 811 and wait for the locate, that's a free service and a few days of patience beats a punctured gas line every time.

What Happens to the Chips and the Roots

Grinding produces a surprising mound of chips, two or three times the stump's volume. We either rake them into the hole and cap it with soil, haul them off, or leave you the pile as free mulch, your call at quote time. The roots beyond the grind stay in the ground and rot away over a few years; they will not sprout a new tree from most species, though hackberry and chinaberry will try, and we'll warn you if yours is a trier.

Why Bother?

Because a dead stump in Houston humidity is a termite feeder sitting fifty feet from your slab, a trip hazard your lawn guy will curse, and a mushroom farm every October. And because you can't mow over it. Most stumps run $100 to $500 depending on diameter and access; grind three or more on one visit and the per-stump price drops. If the stump is still attached to a standing tree, you want our tree removal service first.

Common Questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Houston?

Most stumps run $100 to $500 depending on diameter and access. Multiple stumps on one visit bring the per-stump price down.

Can I plant a new tree where the old stump was?

Yes, with prep. We grind deeper on request, but you'll want to shovel out the chip-and-soil mix and backfill with real soil first, otherwise the new tree sits in decomposing mulch and starves for nitrogen. Offset the new hole a couple of feet if you can, it's easier on everyone.

Will the roots grow back?

For most species, no. The stump was the engine. A few stubborn species like hackberry send up shoots from leftover roots for a season or two; mow them off and they give up.
