Weight reduction over the roofline, live oak
Half the shade in this city hangs off an oak. Trim one right and it outlives everyone reading this page; trim one wrong in the wrong month and you can lose the tree and infect the neighbor's too. Oak trimming is its own discipline, and in Houston it comes with a calendar.
Live oaks are the kings: sprawling, nearly evergreen, and tough as nails when trimmed right. They take well to crown cleaning and clearance work but hold grudges against over-thinning. Water oaks grow fast, die young and shed limbs constantly; most of our storm calls are water oaks. They need regular deadwood removal and honest end-of-life assessments, because a 60-year-old water oak is a senior citizen. Post oaks hate having their roots disturbed and sulk after heavy pruning, so we go light. Red oaks are the most vulnerable to oak wilt and get extra care on timing.
Oak wilt is a fungal disease spread by sap beetles that are most active in Texas from roughly February through June. The beetles find fresh cuts. So in that window we either postpone routine oak trimming or paint every cut immediately, hazard work included. Red oaks die from it in months; live oaks decline over years and spread it through root grafts to their neighbors. The Texas A&M Forest Service tracks it closely (their oak wilt guidance is worth reading at tfsweb.tamu.edu). Any trimmer who shrugs when you say "oak wilt" should not be in your tree.
Weight reduction over the roof without hollowing out the canopy. Deadwood out. Clearance off the shingles and the chimney. Ball moss picked out if it's heavy, though despite the rumors it isn't what's killing the limb, shade is. Sealed cuts in season. And the interior growth stays, because that's the tree's future structure. We trimmed the live oaks on a North Boulevard rental where a previous crew had lion-tailed everything; three years of corrective pruning later the canopy is finally rebuilding.
Most single oak trims run $250 to $800; a huge live oak with full roof overhang can go $800 to $1,800. Firm quote up front, haul-off included, and if the tree honestly doesn't need trimming this year, we'll say so.
July through January is the comfortable window. February through June is oak wilt season; we still handle hazards then, but every cut gets painted the minute it's made.
On oaks during the risk window, yes, every single one. On most other species sealing does more harm than good, so we skip it. The rule is species-specific and we're happy to explain on site.
Usually, but it takes patience: several years of corrective pruning to rebuild structure from the regrowth. We've done it plenty of times. Get us out there before the next storm tests those weak sprouts.
