Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Houston?
For most homeowners inside Houston city limits, no. The city's tree and shrub ordinance mainly applies to commercial property and new development. The catch is your HOA: master-planned communities around Katy, Sugar Land and The Woodlands often want written approval before a mature tree comes down, and we've watched neighbors get a nasty letter three weeks after the stump was ground. If you're in an HOA, check first. We'll give you a written assessment you can attach to the request.
How much does tree trimming cost in Houston?
Tree trimming prices in Houston mostly track tree size. Most single-tree trims run $250 to $800 depending on size and how much deadwood is up there. A small ornamental might be $150. A big mature live oak with a full canopy over the roof can run $800 to $1,800. Removals are a different animal, see our tree removal cost page for real numbers from real jobs.
Can you trim branches near power lines, or do I have to call CenterPoint?
Depends which line. The big primary lines that run pole to pole are CenterPoint's territory, nobody but their contractors should touch trees in those. The service drop that runs from the pole to your house is different: a qualified crew can work around it, and our lead climber DeShawn spent six years on utility line-clearance crews before he came to us. If a tree is actually leaning into a primary line, we'll tell you to call CenterPoint first, and we mean it.
When is the wrong time to trim oak trees?
February through June is the high-risk window for oak wilt in Texas. We still trim oaks in spring when a limb is hazardous, but every cut gets painted immediately, no exceptions. For routine oak shaping we'd rather book you for late summer or winter. A trimmer who shrugs at oak wilt is a trimmer to send home.
Will my homeowner's insurance pay for tree removal?
Usually only if the tree hit something covered, like the house, garage or fence. Fell in the yard and hit nothing? That's typically on you. We photograph everything and write itemized invoices that adjusters actually accept, because we've done a few hundred of these since Beryl.
Is stump grinding included in tree removal?
Not automatically, it's a separate line on the quote so you can decide. Most stumps run $100 to $500 to grind.
